JT08 Adventurous Floating Village

Today we combine two adventures, a unique Jeep ride through the Khmer countryside and kayaking in Kampong Kleang, the largest stilted village on the Tonle Sap Great Lake.

We will pick you up at your hotel with an Army Jeep MUTT 151/A2, ideal to go off road. We leave Siem Reap and drive through the countryside where you can learn more about the daily life of the Cambodian people. On the way to Kampong Kleang you will drive along red-earth roads through paddy fields and palm trees, small villages with farmers herding their cattle.

Life on the Tonle Sap has adapted to the rise and fall of water caused by the phenomenal back flow from the Mekong which feeds the lake during the monsoon.

When the lake is high we launch our kayaks upstream and paddle over flooded paddy fields to the village where the houses rise above the water on 10m stilts. We have lunch on a wooden verandah overlooking the pagoda or drinks in the late afternoon as the fishing boats return to unload their catch.

When the water is low we take a motorboat to the edge of the lake and launch our kayaks at the mouth of the channel, paddling out to a Vietnamese fishing village that congregates out on the open lake.

After the kayaking we leave the floating village and drive through the countryside and hopefully we see a beautiful sunset.

Cost: 8,300 Baht p/p minimum 2 persons.
