Southern Laos 5 Days and 4 Nights
5 Days Southern Laos LAO-004
Day 1: Ubon Ratchathani – Pakse – Bolaven Plateau
Upon arrival at the Thai/Laos border, you will be met by our guide who will drive you to the first stop on your South Laos adventure: Bolaven Plateau via Pakse.
In Pakse you will spend the night in an eco-resort overlooking the Tad Fane waterfalls which thunder down a 200 meter deep gorge.
On your doorstep are well-maintained nature trails for you to explore giving you a close look at the diversity and natural beauty of this region. Enjoy the view as you hike across a hanging bridge and through coffee plantations and local villages.
This region is home to many ethnic tribes, including the Laven, the Alak, the Katu and the Suay people.
Overnight at Tadfane Resort (Standard room)
Day 2: Bolaven Plateau – Champasak – Done Khone (B/-/-)
After breakfast we will drive to a local ferry, and cross the Mekong River to the city of Champasak. Our first stop is at the sacred Khmer temple of Wat Phu. This complex marks the most Eastern border of the Khmer Empire in the 4th Century.
Later in the afternoon we take a scenic drive and a boat trip, disembarking at Done Khone, one of the smaller islands in the ‘Si Pan Don’ area. Here we find the Li Phi Falls. Of particular interest are the remains of a 12-km railway built by the French, as well as an old steam locomotive which once plied this unique railway. This railway is the only rail transport ever constructed in Laos.
Overnight at Sala Done Khone (Ban Lao classic room)
Day 3: Done Khone – Khong Island (B/-/-)
We start the day with fascinating glimpses of what daily village life is like along a large river. In this region you may spot the rare ‘Irrawaddy’ dolphin.
Next on our program is an island hopping walking tour. We will visit just a few of some 4,000 islands located in the mighty Mekong River. Along our walk we will pass through charming villages where local people make a living from the production of rice paper. We stay the night on Khong Island, one of the larger, permanently inhabited islands. Aside from temples and interesting villages dotted all over Khong island, Muang Khong is best known for its pleasant atmosphere.
Overnight at Pon Arena hotel (Deluxe room)
Day 4: Khong Island (B/-/-)
This island is one of the larger, permanently inhabited, islands in the ‘Si Pan Don’ area. Don Khong is best explored by bicycle, so, after breakfast, we’ll take a bicycle tour around Muang Khong, starting from your hotel and following a dirt road which circles the island.
In Ban Houa Khong we will visit Vat Khao Geo, and then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Muang Saen. After lunch we continue our bike trip to Ban Hang Khong and then back to Muang Khong.
Lunch not included.
